invers{\~a}o Inversion Coupled with Imager (ICI).
dados provenientes do sat{\'e}lite NOAA- 15, no per{\'{\i}}odo
tempo fornecidos pelo CPTEC e tamb{\'e}m pelo ECMWF. Diferentes
analisados. As an{\'a}lises envolveram o tratamento dos dados
sele{\c{c}}{\~a}o do perfil inicial e processo de invers{\~a}o;
boa qualidade, e atingiram o n{\'{\i}}vel de desempenho desejado
atmosf{\'e}rica n{\~a}o afeta significantemente a acur{\'a}cia
do processo de invers{\~a}o. {\'E} importante ressaltar
sele{\c{c}}{\~a}o do perfil inicial melhorou consideravelmente a
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this work is to study the
problem of retrieving temperature and moisture protiles in a
tropical atmosphere using data from the Advanced TIROS Operational
Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) sounder. To accomplish this research the
ATOVS and AVHRR Processing Package (AAPP) model for the ingestion
and pre-processing the HRPT files and the Inversion Coupled with
Imager (ICI) system were used for obtaining the sounding products.
Thirty five days of NOAA-15 satellite data over Brazil for the
period of 02/03/2000 to 08/03/2000, were used as data basis. The
results are compared with in-situ measurements (radiosonde
profiles) and the CPTEC nunterical weather prediction analysis.
Different atmospheric conditions and surface types were considered
and the following components of the sounding process were
analyzed: treatment of the satellite's ingestion data;
pre-processing (cloud detection, scattering identification,
surface temperature and emissivity, etc.) data; the first guess
selection and the inversion process (retrieval); the radiative
transfer model (forward model); and analysis of the impact of the
retrieved profiles on a nurneric weather forecast model
performance. The results show that the sounder products had a good
accuracy. The temperature and htunidity profiles retrieved from
ICI model using the changes proposed in the work had reached the
leveis of quality specified by the ATOVS sensors. The results
showed that it is easier to retrieve temperature and tnoisture
profiles over sea than over land and, surprisingly, the
atmospheric conditions do not affect significantly the accuracy of
the inversion process. Also the use of precipitable water as
additional source of information in the first guess selection,
irnprove considerably the error statistics of moisture sotmdings
over oceanic arcas. The impact of the ATOVS soundings in forecasts
field was positive in some arcas but negative in others.",
